When you feel overwhelmed...

Doorknob photo by andycoan (flickr creative commons) Demands knock on my door.

Burdens beckon me to answer.

The to-do list stretches for miles.

I whisper, "I feel overwhelmed."

And in the stillness it seems I hear...

"Child, open your heart to Me instead of the demands of the day.

Lay those burdens at My feet, not on your shoulders.

Let go of your list and dare to embrace My grace.

I do not require you to be overwhelmed.

I enable you to overcome.

And with Me, you always will."

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. John 16:33

Dear Holley,

I constantly feel overwhelmed. Your to-do list sounds a lot like mine. As I read your post, I thought to myself that I don't know how to let go of my list but, at the same time, I thought that hanging onto it sure hasn't helped me to feel less overwhelmed. God's grace definitely has helped me to overcome much. I love that Bible verse, too. It has been a comfort to me in the last couple of years but I never would have thought of it in this helpful way about these kinds of burdens.

As always, thank you so much.

Love and blessings,

As I read this in a dark, quiet house, my two toddlers will wake up at any minute and the demands of the day will begin... full-speed ahead. I'm so thankful for the reminder your post is to me that we are "enabled to overcome" even amidst what sometimes feels like overwhelming responsibility. I should start more days with this type of reflection. Thanks!

Child, open your heart to Me instead of the demands of the day. This is what I must focus on today. I will not be overwhelmed. I am only one person and I can only complete what God enables me to complete. I must not fret over what I have no control over. I must lay it at Jesus' feet.

Amen

I love your words Holley! This blog is beautifully written. And yes, every so often we are faced with every kinds of occurrences in other people's lives for example, in our loved ones, our friends, when they are in need or having trouble and they want and need our attention and on top of that there are the to-do-list of errands, household chores... "Demands always knock on my door and burdens beckons me to answer them..." Friends sometimes would beckon you, wanting you to go the distance with them... Well I like it when you said you hear in you heart to Let go of the list and lay the burdens on God's feet; let go and embrace my grace. The Bible says, in Matthew 11:28-30 (The Message) "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me - Watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." I love these verses. Another one is in 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)and says, "But He said to me,"My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness." I also love this verse a lot Holley. Your blog is always lovely and a blessing to us. I also think that there is a blessing when we give ourselves to helping others, making their burden's light as well because we answer when they beckon us with their burdens.

Why is it that when we feel overwhelmed we forget to take it to the Lord? (I do anyway)Then we or I get so frustrated with all that's going on. I always feel that "I can do it by myself" and all I need to remember is to take it to the Lord. Thanks Holley!
